HALLIE

Zayne texts me to tell me his mom wants me over for dinner again, but I lie and say I have to study for an exam tomorrow. He believes me, or maybe he wanted me to say no. I didn’t miss the way he got me out of his house as quickly as possible after she started talking about him. It’s clear to me that Alyssa doesn’t want me with her son. I think maybe he did something really fucked up and she doesn’t want me to get hurt, I’m just not sure what could be so bad.

I don’t think my heart can take knowing the reasons. I don’t think my heart can handle the pain. I don’t think I can watch myself break.

Not yet.

I need more time.

More time with him.

More time as us.

I haven’t even scratched the surface.

I haven’t put my dent in his heart.

But even as I beg for more time, I already know that it will never be enough.

Never.

I want him to eat me alive.

Gobble me up.

Swallow me whole.

I just never expected him to spit me back out.
